Space between the penetration such as pipes or cables and the fire barrier must be sealed with a protective barrier able to maintain the required fire resistance of the barrier.

Life and Safety Code dictates “Pipes, conduits, bus ducts, cables, wires, air ducts, HVAC ducts, and similar building service equipment that pass through fire-rated barriers are protected as follows: The space between the penetrating item and the fire barrier is filled with a material (at both sides or for the full thickness of the barrier) capable of maintaining the required fire resistance of the barrier, or is protected by a specifically designed device.”-Based on AAAHC Physical Environment Checklist for Medicare deem status inspection.

You want to make sure that the pipes or conduits penetrating the fire wall are properly sealed and fire caulked.
