The key elements to a successful infection control program include tracking patient infections and implementing surveillance projects of focus for the surgery center staff.  Part of the Infection Control Coordinator’s job description is to oversee various infection control surveillance activities.    When observing hand hygiene techniques of staff members make sure you document that you observed or witnessed the following protocols:

Hand wash for 15 seconds

When using alcohol based hand rub until dry

Hand wash after direct patient contact

Hand wash before performing the procedure

Hand wash after contact with blood, body fluids or contaminated surfaces

Alcohol hand rub after glove removal
